Two YSN faculty members, Ivy Alexander and Nancy Banasiak, were selected as winners of the 2010 Nightingale Award for Nursing Excellence in Connecticut. Richard Blumenthal, Attorney General for Connecticut, served as Honorary Chair and Keynote Speaker of the 10th anniversary of the event, held May 5 at the Oakdale Theater in Wallingford, CT.
The Nightingale Awards program was begun by the VNA of South Central Connecticut and honors nurses who make special contributions to patient care. In connection with this program, YSN student Brandon Ko '10 received a Nightingale Scholarship on April 15.
An accomplished educator and clinician, YSN Associate Professor Ivy Alexander is Director of YSN's Adult, Family, Gerontological, and Women's Health Primary Care Specialty. She is a noted expert in midlife women’s health and has published widely on the subject, including two popular and award-winning consumer books on osteoporosis and menopause. Dr. Alexander was inducted as a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing in November 2009.
Associate Professor Nancy Banasiak is a pediatric nurse practitioner with expertise in primary
care of urban children with asthma. She has led coordination of asthma care for over 700 children at Yale-New Haven Hospital Pediatric Primary Care Center. Banasiak is a dedicated volunteer at AmeriCares, where she conducts bi-monthly clinical sessions for uninsured people in southwestern CT. She has been selected as a clinical respiratory expert by the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners.
