A time to celebrate, a time to move forward

As you have seen from our front page, Yale University School of Nursing (YSN) now ranks 7th in the U.S. News and World Report's listing of graduate schools of nursing. At the last ranking in 2003, we were 10th among over 1,000 graduate schools across the United States. In addition to this fabulous achievement, our specialty programs were ranked in the top five. These include Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Specialty (first), Adult Medical-Surgical Clinical Specialist and Midwifery (third), Family Nurse Practitioner and Psychiatric-Mental Health (fourth), and Adult Nurse Practitioner (fifth).

U.S. News gathers opinion data from deans, program directors and senior faculty in addition to statistical information that measures the quality of a school's faculty, research and students.

To assure that we maintain our standards, I continue an open dialogue with students and faculty as we evaluate current programs in the context of health care trends and other economic forces. To quote our Bellos lecturer, Jane Metzger, RN, DNSc, we are "approaching the perfect storm" in health care. At YSN, we must predict and respond to the rapidly changing forces in health care so that we stay responsive and ahead of the curve.

It is important to take a moment to celebrate our success. It is equally important not to become complacent. To stay in the forefront requires us to adopt and grow. Our work in enhancing teaching and learning at YSN is one shining example.
