Degree Requirements
YSN's strength among doctoral programs in nursing is its focus on the science of clinical nursing practice and its relationship to health systems research and health policy. This focus provides a solid foundation for graduates to participate in future scholarship and education that is clinically significant and improves the health care of individuals, families, or communities
Fields of Study
Fields include chronic illness (diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, HIV/AIDS); self and family management; maternal and child health; policy and politics of health care; health equity and care of vulnerable populations; acute and critical care; children with mental health disorders; end-of-life and palliative care; environmental health; gerontology and long-term care; and school and community-based interventions.
Core Courses and Cognates
The educational program is provided through formal coursework, seminars,
research assistantships, teaching fellowships, advisement, informal faculty and student interactions, and dissertation research. Typically, the scholarship of the faculty and students involves interdisciplinary work with colleagues in such fields as psychology, medicine, and epidemiology.
The YSN PhD curriculum is designed to prepare expert nurse scholars. Particular emphasis is placed on knowledge development that is consistent with the mission of YSN "better health care for all" and contributes to healthy life spans, reducing health disparities, improving the quality of health care, and shaping health policy. Course work is organized in three areas.
- Conceptual Basis of Nursing (e.g., 913a)
- Methods of Inquiry (e.g., courses in research methods, measurement, and statistics: 901a, 903a, 905b, 917b)
- Health Systems and Policy (e.g., 961a)
Completion of the required core courses (listed below) and six cognates are required. The grading system includes Honors, High Pass, Pass, and Fail. Students must maintain a High Pass average and achieve a grade of Honors in at least two core courses to remain in good standing. If a student does not achieve these grade standards, the student will receive additional academic advisement and will be placed on academic probation for one term before being withdrawn from the program.
