Patricia T. Becker
Class of 1956
From Phi Beta Kappa at Oberlin College to PhD at the University of Connecticut, she lay the cornerstone for her career in research, teaching, and service at the Yale School of Nursing where she earned her master's degree in 1956. An internationally recognized scholar in the stress response of vulnerable infants, she has focused on incorporating bio-physiological factors, such as low birth weight, with socio-psychological factors in her work on the appropriate handling of, and establishing environments for, infants in neonatal intensive care units, nurseries, and birthing centers. Her work and practice in this developmental care has been replicated and adapted by care-providers worldwide and her research has been funded by the likes of The Ford Foundation, the United States Public Health Service, and the National Institutes of Health.
Not only has this Yale Nurse focused on research and the dissemination of knowledge in the care of mothers and infants, she has also developed training programs that are in existence today, shaping curricula in schools of nursing and preparing advanced practice nurses.
Since 1991 she has been Associate Editor of one of nursing's most prestigious journals, Research in Nursing and Health, and is frequently invited to write book chapters, give keynote addresses, and present workshops. She also finds time to review grant applications and manuscripts. In 1995 she was inducted into the American Academy of Nursing.
For her many named and unnamed contributions to the profession, as witnessed through her research and her teaching, she exemplifies the best of Yale nursing. The Yale School of Nursing Alumnae/i Association is proud and honored to claim Patricia T. Becker, Class of 1956, as a Distinguished Alumna.
