Distinguished Alumna Award 2001
Maureen O'Keefe Doran
Class of 1971
Since she earned the Master of Science in Nursing degree in the early 1970's, clinical work has always been this Yale School of Nursing graduate's passion and her forte. She was a pioneer in validating the role of the clinical nurse specialist in private psychotherapy practice. Her commitment to her patients and her peers at Denver's VA Medical Center influenced her decision to become a founder and officer of the Denver chapter of the Nurses Organization of Veterans Affairs (NOVA), a national organization representing VA nurses and addressing their professional issues and concerns. The Denver chapter flourished under her leadership. The data and ideas provided by NOVA during Congressional hearings have been instrumental in shaping VA health care policies and its reorganization, especially during this past decade.
Throughout her career she has received many awards for her expert clinical work. She was named the Outstanding Nurse Clinician, State of Colorado, by the University of Colorado, and was awarded the Excellence in Nursing Award by the Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs.
In 1990, she turned her time and talents back to Yale. At first she accepted the position of Delegate to the Association of Yale Alumni (AYA), and then moved on to become Treasurer, Secretary, and Vice-Chair of the Board of Governors. She now serves as Chair. At AYA she is hard working, creative, and a popular officer, ever mindful and always proud of her roots as a Yale Nurse.
Yale School of Nursing and her Alumnae/i Association are proud to proclaim Maureen O'Keefe Doran, Class of 1971, a Distinguished Alumna.
