Stacy Young-McCaughan
Class of 1989
Colonel Stacey Young-McCaughan has practiced nursing for 24 years. She was one of the very early persons to investigate aerobic exercise and quality of life in women with breast cancer. Stacey has completed over a decade of research. She is enthusiastic and passionate about nursing research and is an articulate spokesperson for nursing. Her program of research continues to focus on exercise and women who have survived breast cancer. Stacey's studies have progressed from exploratory to testing an intervention to examining outcomes of intervention. Dr. Young-McCaughan's research has drawn the attention of many. Twice she has received the prestigious Phyllis J. Verhonick Award for Nursing Research. Her findings have been published in Oncology Nursing Forum, Cancer Nursing, New Zealand Nursing Forum, and Pain Management Nursing.
Stacey's contributions to nursing research include: development of a program of research, publication and podium presentations, and development of colleagues who participated in multi-site research studies. She has a special talent for working with multi-site teams. She has been an exemplary role model for staff. Additionally, Dr. Young-McCaughan has addressed forums, convened by members of Congress, concerning United States Department of Defense funding for breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and prostate cancer research. She played a pivotal role in securing critical funding from the Department of Defense for cancer research.
Dr. Young-McCaughan's years in nursing have been marked by accomplishment and honor. We recognize her distinguished career as researcher, clinician, and educator. Her intellect, energy, and record of achievement guarantee that she will be in the forefront of nursing research for many years to come. It is with great pride that the Yale School of Nursing and her Alumna/us Association present the Distinguished Alumna Award for 2004 to Dr. Stacey Young-McCaughan, Class of 1989.
