Distinguished Alumna Award 2007
Carolyn Jaramillo de Montoya
Class of 1981
Pioneer. Teacher. Mentor. Educational program director. Leader of state and national nursing organizations. And at the core of it all, pediatric nurse practitioner. This alumna's work has broken barriers to practice for nurse practitioners and increased access to health care for patients. She created the first pediatric nurse practitioner program in the State of New Mexico and has assured the high quality of continuing education opportunities to satisfy the needs of existing nurse practitioners. She orchestrated changes in her native State of New Mexico so that nurse practitioners there enjoy one of the most liberal nurse practice acts in the country. She has provided leadership as President of the American College of Nurse Practitioners and the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, advocating on behalf of all nurse practitioners and the people they serve. As a clinician and public servant, she has dedicated herself to rural and underserved populations. In her own clinical practice, she is now seeing the children of the children she first cared for. Her work espouses YSN's mission of "better health care for all people". Indeed, she is the image of a YSN graduate.
For her exemplary leadership in clinical practice and professional advocacy, and in recognition of the bravery it took for her to come to Yale in the first place, the Yale University School of Nursing and her Alumna/us association are pleased to recognize Carolyn Jaramillo de Montoya of the Class of 1981 as the Yale University School of Nursing Distinguished Alumna for 2007.
