Rediscover Yale: Come Play, Come Learn

Friday, September 30

The packet will include the final program for the weekend, as well as name badges and other materials. Tickets for individual sessions will also be provided at registration. 8:45 - 9:00 am Welcoming Remarks
Lecture Hall, First Floor
9:00 - 9:30 am Morning Session I: Do You See What I See?
Lecture Hall, First Floor

When creative writing meets nursing practice, a wonderful mixture of art, emotion, and the essence of nursing emerges. YSN faculty Linda Honan Pellico '89, who developed the Creative Writing Award at YSN, will introduce several GEPN students and their literary works of art. Come hear what students see and feel during their very first year of learning to be a nurse.

9:30 - 11:00 am Morning Session II: Sharing Our Nursing Stories
Lecture Hall, First Floor

Garrett Morrison, Yale College '06 will describe his experiences in conducting an oral history with YSN Dean Emeritus Florence Wald '41. This will be followed by an opportunity for faculty, students and alumnae/i to gather in smaller groups and share some of their own stories. Come prepared to tell your story: why you chose to become a nurse, recall a most memorable moment, or describe your adventures after graduation from YSN.

11:00 - 11:15 am Break
The following sessions run concurrently and require advance registration:
11:15 am - 12:15 pm Morning Session IIIa: Linking to Yale, YSN and Alumnae/i Through Cyberspace

Are you being left behind on the information highway? Did you know that you can have a Yale e-mail address? YSN's IT Department and a representative from the Association of Yale Alumni (AYA) will help you focus on the resources available to alumnae/i through the YSN and AYA websites. Participants will navigate through the YSN website, the Alumni On-Line Directory and the Yale Career Network. Participants will learn how to set up a Yale e-mail account, review the site and how to use the services.

11:15 am - 12:45 pm Morning Session IIIb: Hand Casting
Location TBA

Providing "hands-on" care takes on new meaning when Artist Melinda Bridgman shows examples of the hand molds made by students and provides participants with an opportunity to cast their own hands. (Limited to the first 30 registrants.)

12:15 pm - 1:30 pm Lunch
Reference Room

Lunch will be provided by the YSN Alumnae/i Association for students, faculty and alumnae/i. This hour will give all the participants an opportunity to meet YSNs' new Dean.

2:00 pm - 3:30 pm Afternoon Session I: Documentary: "Super Size Me"
Hope Building - H110
315 Cedar Street

To test the impact fast food has on the human body, director Morgan Spurlock ate nothing but McDonald's for thirty consecutive days while shooting this feature film. The results will shock you. "Super Size Me" was nominated for an Academy Award in 2005. We regret that no popcorn will be served at this movie event (particularly the good kind served with tons of cottonseed and palm oil).

3:30 pm - 3:45 pm Break
3:45 pm - 4:45 pm Afternoon Session II: Keynote Speaker Kelly Brownell, PhD
Hope Building - H110
315 Cedar Street

Kelly Brownell is Director of the Yale Center for Eating and Weight Disorders and Professor and Chair of Psychology at Yale. A crusader against America's toxic food environment, he is perhaps best known for proposing the controversial "Twinkie Tax" on junk food. Dr. Brownell's research deals primarily with eating and body weight regulation with particular focus on the conflict between culture--which shapes the perception that our bodies and our health can be controlled--and genetic, environmental and other factors that limit actual personal control. After the presentation, Dr. Brownell will sign copies of his book, Food Fight: The Inside Story of the Food Industry, America's Obesity Crisis, and What We Can Do About It.

6:30 pm Dinner on your own

If you've recently watched the Food Channel, or if you've read The New York Times or Wine Spectator, you've probably seen that the Elm City is bursting onto the national dining scene. With more than 100 restaurants within a short walk from the Green, Downtown New Haven is carving out a national reputation as a food lover's dream. We have reserved spots at some of the old and new stomping grounds in New Haven. A list of restaurants will be provided in your registration packet.

A special evening at Mory's has been reserved for the Reunion Classes of 1980, 1955, 1950, 1945, 1940, 1935.

Lecture Hall, First Floor

Join our very own authors to discuss their latest books and the challenges of writing them. The authors will be available for book signing after the session.

Donna Diers '64, former Dean and Professor Emerita, has been a keen observer of nursing's evolving environment since the 1960s. Speaking of Nursing: Narratives of Practice, Research, Policy, and the Profession is a career- long compilation of Donna's published and unpublished pieces about issues in nursing research, advanced practice, policy, and public image.

In their book, 100 Questions and Answers About Menopause, YSN Specialty Director Ivy Alexander and Karla Knight '77 offer an invaluable resource for anyone coping with the physical and emotional turmoil of menopause. The authors provide advice and guidance about understanding menopause symptoms and treatment options including lifestyle changes, alternative therapies and prescription medications from the provider and patient's point of view.

Does your day start by entrusting your child safely to someone else for the rest of the day? Rather than considering child care as just a work and family issue, Sally Cohen '80, Director of the YSN Center for Health Policy and Ethics, analyzes it from the perspective of legislative politics in her compelling book, Championing Childcare.

A practicing nurse-midwife, Elizabeth Letts '95, has ventured into the realm of fiction writing. Quality of Care, her first novel, is an involving, nuanced story about the search for healing and the fragility of both our bodies and our souls that has been described as "an unforgettable debut by a talented and thought-provoking literary voice."
