YSN's first graduating class

Originally there were twelve members of the Class of 1926 of the Yale School of Nursing. Their yearbook states that they referred to themselves as "the Twelve Disciples." Their photos and brief biographies are featured in the slideshow, below. One quarter of the class of 1926 withdrew before graduation. Here are their stories...

Elizabeth Bowne Crawford was born in Montclair, NJ on March 30, 1906, the daughter of Samuel Henry Crawford and Helen Denniston Crawford. She went to the Kimberly School in Montclair, NJ before attending YSN. Elizabeth fell ill and suffered from a throat abscess. Her last day of class at YSN was February 18, 1925 and she withdrew in November 1925. She died in Long Beach, CA on January 11, 1958.

Eleanor ("Nora") Alderson Janeway was born in New York City on March 5, 1900, the daughter of Eleanor Caroline Tyson and Yale graduate Theodore Caldwell Janeway, M.D., '91 Ph.D. who taught at Yale and was the Director of the Rockefeller Institute of Medical Research until his death in 1917. Eleanor attended Barnard College from 1918 to 1920. She withdrew from YSN in August 1924 and married Yale Medical School Class of 1924 graduate John McKenney Mitchell, who later became dean of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. She died in Chicago, IL on October 21, 1960.

Marion Schollhorn was born in New Haven, Connecticut on September 10, 1905. She left YSN on February 19, 1924. Miss Schollhorn has the distinction of being the first student to withdraw from YSN. Her application for admission is not on file together with her classmates.' She is mentioned in a file from the registrar. There is a remark about her withdrawing, which reads: "Apparently not considered registered. No reason given." She was 18 years old at the time she withdrew. Marion was the daughter of William and Lucille Schollhorn. She married Kenneth Byers by 1930 and later resided in Orange, Connecticut. Marion died in New Haven, CT on February 13, 1980.
