Center for Excellence in Chronic Illness Care

"The Center for Excellence in Chronic Illness Care promotes excellence in nursing care of persons with or at risk for chronic illness through the integration of practice, research, and education. The Center provides opportunities to collaborate with other disciplines, to train researchers of the future, and to support the delivery of research results into clinical practice."

-- Ruth McCorkle, PhD, FAAN

Center Overview

The Center for Excellence in Chronic Illness Care was established in 1999 to study the unique experience of chronic illness as it affects patients, families and survivors. The Center's work focuses on multiple areas in which Yale School of Nursing (YSN) faculty has a strong tradition of research expertise. These areas include AIDS/HIV, cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The Center's ultimate aim, however, is not to study specific diseases in isolation, but to understand the overall experience of chronic illness. The Center examines the impact that chronic illness has on individuals, and the ways in which the health care system can empower patients and families to manage that impact to achieve a better quality of life.

Mission and Goals

The mission of the Center for Excellence in Chronic Illness Care is the facilitation and promotion of excellence in care of persons affected by chronic illness. The Center focuses on nursing care that prevents illness, promotes health and enhances quality of life for all individuals affected by or at risk for chronic illness.
