3rd annual research symposium, May 2007
Translating nursing science to health care practice

Dr. Marita Titler, Director of Research, Quality and Outcomes Management in the Department of Nursing Services and Patient Care at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC), gave the keynote address at YSN's Center for Self and Family Management of Vulnerable Populations' third annual research symposium on May 17, 2007.

Her talk, titled "Innovations and Translation Science," focused on her experiences moving the scientific data that are confirmed as the result of nursing research into the field of clinical practice where it may improve the lives of patients and their families.

The symposium also featured a respondent panel who added their community health perspective to the discussion. Panelists included Katrina Clark, Director of Fair Haven Community Health Center, and Joanne Walsh, CEO and President of the Visiting Nurse Association of South Central Connecticut. In addition, YSN faculty members, Dr. Ruth McCorkle and Dr. Gail Melkus, delivered presentations on their center funded research.

A synthesis and wrap up of the day's discussion was presented by Kerry Eaton, Vice President for Patient Outcomes at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport, CT where she oversees Quality and Performance Improvement in Patient Care.

2nd annual research symposium, October 2005
Inaugural Catherine Gilliss Lecture in Health Disparities is delivered

The Center for Self and Family Management of Vulnerable Populations hosted its second annual symposium on October 28, 2005. Kathy Sanders-Phillips, PhD, a professor at Howard University delivered the inaugural Catherine Gilliss lecture titled, ìThe Social Determinants of Health Disparities in Secondary Social Groups."

Trained as a developmental psychologist at the Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Sanders-Phillips is nationally and internationally known as an expert on the topics of children's exposure to community violence and the relationship between exposure to violence and risky behaviors.

Over the course of her career, Dr. Sanders-Phillips has developed expertise in crosscutting and intersecting areas that address health problems at the community level to levels of national policy. Moreover, she brings unique insights into issues related to the development of research programs at minority institutions and the training of minorities for social scientific careers.

The event also featured presentations by YSN faculty members Deborah Chyun, Dena Schulman-Green, and Lois Sadler.
