Josiah Macy's Yale-Howard
Interdisciplinary Health Scholars Program

For students in their senior or junior years

Program runs from June 22 – August 1, 2009

Howard University and other students interested in pursuing research careers in the health sciences are encouraged to apply for Josiah Macy's Yale-Howard Interdisciplinary Health Scholars Program. The Program is a partnership between Howard University and Yale University School of Nursing. The aim of this interdisciplinary health program is to introduce ethnic minority students to careers within the professions of nursing, medicine, psychology, and public health.

The program will include the following:

• Health Equity Seminars
• Participation with Research Teams
• Learning Skills Orientation
• Clinical Shadowing Experience
• GRE prep classes

To be eligible for SMNEP, an applicant must:

• Be a college senior or junior
• Have an overall GPA of 3.00 (with 3.00 in the sciences), or equivalent academic credentials
• Be a U.S. citizen or hold a permanent resident visa
• Must have a goal to apply to grad school

Other factors that are considered include that a student:

• Identifies with a group that is racially/ethnically underrepresented in nursing, medicine, public health, psychology or other health-related professional disciplines (as defined by each site)
• Comes from an economically or educationally disadvantaged background
• Has demonstrated an interest in issues related to and affecting underserved populations
• Is a local and/or regional resident
• Submits a compelling personal statement
• Receives strong letters of recommendation
