Depression, Exercise and Metabolic State in Hispanic and African American Youth

Gilberto Andino worked with Dr. Margaret Grey, Associate Dean for Research Affairs at YSN, to investigate the relationship between depression and exercise and the link to metabolic state among Hispanic youth with diabetes. Addressing his experience at Yale, Gilberto says, "I wanted to gain practical insight into nursing research techniques because I want to help patients live healthier and more productive lives. I believe that patient advocacy and education is important and I want to conduct research to examine how an emphasis on educating the patient can boost compliance with medical treatment."

Discussing his view on the importance of nursing research to patient care, Gilberto says, "Before, when I took a blood pressure reading it was just to record the number. But I see things differently now that I've had nursing research experience. I think more holistically. I see from looking at the data in a study just what it can mean to bring these numbers down where they belong. And I can take that insight and explain to my patient why these blood pressure numbers are so important. When I teach a patient about hypertension and then he comes back to me and he is now doing better, I know I have done something. I know I have impacted a life."

As a native of Puerto Rico, Gilberto explains, "Nurse researcher is not a common role in most Hispanic countries. My goal is to become an FNP, nurse researcher and nursing instructor so that I can facilitate change through my work with patients."
