Prior to entering Howard, LeSabre received an Associate's Degree in Science from DePage College in Glen Ellyn, IL where she was President of the Black Student Union and a member of the DePage Student Council. An aunt who is a registered nurse inspired LeSabre to pursue the nursing profession. "As a child I was always around nurses and physicians," she recalled. "I also have older family members who I knew I could help if I were to pursue nursing. Nursing is in my blood. I feel like it was always meant for me."
At Yale, LeSabre was mentored by Drs. Terri Clark and Kristopher Fennie (in photo above). The title of her presentation was "HIV and Pregnancy in Rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa."
"Vertical transmission of HIV, from mother to child at birth is one of the major causes of HIV in this province," explained LeSabre. "It is important that improvements be made in treating pregnant women with HIV, especially in the administration of Nevirapine during labor." LeSabre plans to enroll in a master's in nursing program and specialize in nurse-midwifery following her graduation from Howard. Inspired by what she learned at Yale, as part of her graduate work, she would like to further examine how the presence of foreign healthcare providers may affect the rate of vertical transmission of HIV."
