Eric Foster worked with Dr. Kathleen Knafl, YSN Doctoral Program Professor, to investigate the experience of African American families dealing with a child's diagnosis of sickle cell anemia. Of his exposure to nursing research during his stay at Yale, Eric said "I had a previous scientific research background, but not nursing research. Observing Dr. Knafl's interaction with her staff and seeing the whole nursing research process -- everything that goes into it and everything that comes out of it -- really enlivens and enriches my understanding." He added, "Seeing all these people at work doing nursing research, being successful at it and seeming to enjoy it, opened the door and gave me exposure, by putting me face-to-face with researchers."
Discussing his future plans and the impact the Yale-Howard program has had, Eric said, "I do plan on applying to graduate school, and coming to Yale has certainly broadened my awareness. I've never been in an environment where I'm asked to present my findings to a group that includes people with PhDs and other advanced degrees. That's a challenge - we'll be in the spotlight and we'll have to produce! But I'm confident. I see myself working in the nursing field and affiliated with a university doing nursing research and maybe teaching."
