Krystal worked with professor Marge Funk at Yale to investigate gender differences in pre-existing conditions, intra-operative procedures, and post-operative complications in patients undergoing cardiac surgery.
"Women with heart disease are often diagnosed and treated on the basis of research findings from predominantly male samples," said Krystal.
"Women tend to have more pre-existing conditions and post-operative complications than men.
Health care professionals need to be aware of the risk of cardiovascular disease in women instead of attributing their problems to non-cardiac factors, such as stress."
Krystal, who currently works in the ICU unit of Virginia Hospital, plans to continue doing so for 2 years after graduating from Howard, and then to go onto graduate studies.
She also plans to continue to be an outspoken advocate for the nursing profession. "This country needs more nurse specialists and nurse researchers, and I feel responsible to help recruit them in my day-to-day life," she said.
"The Yale-Howard Scholars program is a great way for nursing students to get exposed to research."
