Josiah Macy's Yale-Howard
Summer Medical and Nursing Education Program

For students in their freshman or sophomore years

Program runs from June 22 – August 1, 2009

This program is for freshman and sophomore students who are interested in a career in nursing, medicine, public health, psychology, or other related health professions.

The program will include the following:

• Science Academic Enrichment
• Nursing, Medical, Public Health, Psychology or Health-related Professional Career Development
• Learning Skills Orientation
• Clinical Shadowing Experience
• Financial Planning Orientation
• GRE prep classes

To be eligible for SMNEP, an applicant must

• Be a college freshman or sophomore
• Have an overall GPA of 3.00 (with 3.00 in the sciences), or equivalent academic credentials
• Be a U.S. citizen or hold a permanent resident visa

Other factors that are considered include that a student

• Has a combined verbal and math SAT score of at least 950 or ACT score of at least 20
• Identifies with a group that is racially/ethnically underrepresented in nursing, medicine, public health, psychology or other health-related professional disciplines (as defined by each site)
• Comes from an economically or educationally disadvantaged background
• Has demonstrated an interest in issues related to and affecting underserved populations
• Is a local and/or regional resident
• Submits a compelling personal statement
• Receives strong letters of recommendation
