2006 Award Recipient - Sheryl Combs
As part of the 2005 Sybil Palmer Bellos Lecture which took place on April 20, 2005, Acting Dean Katherine Jones presented Sheryl Combs, a 2004 YSN graduate with MSN in Psych-Mental Health and a 2005 YSN Candidate for a Post Masters certificate in Pediatrics, with this year's Community Service Award.
Sheryl is described by her peers as "extraordinarily compassionate toward community service and an enthusiastic, inspiring humanitarian." For the past two years, she has been running the teen group at the Cove: Safe Harbors for Grieving Children which is an organization that provides support services for grieving families that have lost a child or spouse. Last October, she worked with Habitat for Humanity and will hit hammer to nail at another New Haven build this June. For the summer build, she put together a group of volunteers to work with her. Last fall she also volunteered at the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp weekend, working with children who have serious illnesses and their families. More recently, she worked with the Neighborhood Health Project screening the underprivileged and homeless for hypertension and diabetes. Currently, she assists a children's running program through Beecher Elementary School in Woodbridge. This program gets children interested in running and staying physically active. The award honors Sheryl for her loyal commitment and sustained contributions to the community.
