2007 Award Recipient - Jessica Theorin
Nurse Midwifery student Jessica Theorin, '08, was recently presented with the 2007 Yale University School of Nursing (YSN) Community Service Award for her outstanding commitment to helping those in need.
Margaret Grey, Dean of YSN and Annie Goodrich Professor, recently presented the Community Service Award as part of the 2007 Sybil Palmer Bellos Lecture.
"Students at YSN become leaders in advanced practice nursing by excelling in their studies and clinical work," read Dean Grey at the award ceremony. "Their leadership skills are further honed through their involvement in the community. Over the years, our students have helped develop and have taken part in numerous area outreach programs that have enriched the lives of individuals and families in greater New Haven."
Each year since 1994, YSN has recognized a student who has made outstanding contributions to the New Haven community in the delivery of health care or volunteered their time through other outreach efforts.
Since first arriving at YSN, Jessica has volunteered at the Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen in New Haven (DESK). In the past year, she has taken on the additional responsibility of coordinating volunteers for DESK, always making sure that health care students are available to provide medical screening services, health education and over the counter. In addition, she has also volunteered on several occasions with the "Have Bones, Will Travel" program and also at the HAVEN free clinic.
"Not only has this student given her service to the New Haven community at large, she is a constant positive presence in the YSN community - organizing prospective student potlucks, and hosting prospective students in her home," Dean Grey added. "Yale nurses are called upon to make a difference, and this Yale Nursing student has done just that. For her compassion, deep commitment and significant contributions to her community, we are proud to present Jessica with this Community Service Award."
