Professor Alonzo received his doctorate from the University of California Berkeley. Prior to joining the Yale University School of Nursing as a Research Scientist he held an appointment in the Department of Sociology at Ohio State University and was a research sociologists at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the NIH. At Ohio State University he taught courses in medical sociology, symbolic interactionism and introductory sociology.
His current research and writing has focused on health and illness behaviors surrounding acute myocardial infarction. He is currently conducting a study of care-seeking during acute coronary syndromes [ACS] using a national sample. Study participants are invited to complete a web based self-tailoring survey instrument. Results from this study will be used to design strategies to place individuals stricken with ACS under medical care as quickly as possible to prevent unnecessary morbidity and mortality.
