“Mental health problems in children and adolescents is a area of growing concern in our country. At Yale University School of Nursing we are committed to preparing the best child and adolescent nurse practitioners to meet the mental health needs of this population. Evaluating and treating children and families with mental health needs is exceptionally rewarding to decrease symptoms of depression, anxiety, oppositional behaviors, provide new coping strategies, and improve family functioning. Group therapies can help these youth feel less isolated and be an avenue to teach improved coping strategies. Advanced Practice Nurses are in a key position to improve the functioning of these youth by intervening in the child's individual life, family environment, school environment, and implementing community resources. Child and adolescent APRN's are adept in providing individual, family, group and psychopharmacological management to help children and adolescents achieve their optimal functioning. ”
