About

Dena Schulman-Green is a gerontologist whose main research interests relate to end-of-life care. She earned a B.A. in Psychology from Boston University in 1992, an Ed.M and an M.A. in Counseling Psychology from Columbia University in 1994, and an M.S. and a Ph.D. in Gerontology from the University of Massachusetts in 1999 and 2002. Dr. Schulman-Green came to Yale in January of 2002 for post-doctoral training on breast cancer and end-of-life issues, and joined the faculty in the summer of 2003.

Dr. Schulman-Green's program of research has included an evaluation of the current palliative care services offered at Yale-New Haven Hospital, identification of factors related to delayed hospice referral, investigation of how nurses communicate with patients about prognosis and hospice referral, and development and testing of an instrument to facilitate clinician-patient communication on attainment of health goals. These studies have primarily focused on clinicians' and family members' experiences of end-of-life issues. Dr. Schulman-Green's current work focuses on the experiences of patients. Of particular interest is how patients manage care transitions at the end of life given the possibilities of lack of information about non-curative treatment options and limited communication with clinicians.

Dr. Schulman-Green is the Project Director for a clinical trial for women newly diagnosed with ovarian cancer. The purpose of the study is to test an intervention provided by advanced practice nurses in conjunction with a psychiatric consultation-liaison nurse. The intervention aims to enhance the quality of life of these women and ultimately to extend their survival.

Dr. Schulman-Green is involved with the Yale Cancer Center, the Yale Program on Aging, and the Interdisciplinary Geriatric Research Center at the School of Medicine, which focuses on end-of-life care. She also holds positions in the Gerontological Society of America, the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education, and sits on the Board of the Jewish Home for the Aged in New Haven.
