YSN Associate Professor Mary Moller made a recent trip to Singapore for a two week visiting professorship, through Singapore’s Health Manpower Development Programme.
Mary Moller, DNP, ARNP, APRN, PMHCNS-BC, CPRP, FAAN, is YSN’s Psychiatric-Mental Health Specialty Director and a clinical specialist in adult mental health nursing. She was identified for the visiting professorship through the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, for which she is president-elect.
Moller had an eventful visit to Singapore, delivering 72 hours of lectures in 9 days for nurses at the Institute of Mental Health/Woodbridge Hospital, a 2000-bed psychiatric facility, the largest in Asia.
Moller trained advanced practice, staff, and community nurses in a comprehensive psychiatric rehabilitation nursing model that included patients from several hospital units. Advanced practice nursing is a relatively new concept in that country, where APRNs have only existed for the past three years.
Moller was also invited to give the keynote address for the celebration of National Nurses Day. The event was attended by Singapore's Minister of Health, Khaw Boon Wan. "As a result of that keynote, the Minister set a committee in motion to change the national nursing act to allow prescriptive authority for APRNs," Moller said. "Advanced practice nurses in Singapore are positioned to become the psychiatric nursing clinical leaders in Asia."
Moller is now coordinating a program for nurses from Singapore to come to the U.S. to shadow psychiatric APRNs who are actively prescribing medications in a variety of settings.
As part of National Nurses Celebration Moller was invited to Istana, the official presidential residence, where she was able to meet with President S. R. Nathan and his wife. |
