Dean Margaret Grey elected to membership in the Institute of Medicine

New Haven, CT — October 24, 2005

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academies has elected Dean Margaret Grey, along with 63 additional scholars to IOM membership, raising the Institute's total active membership to 1,461.

This year marks the 35th anniversary of the IOM, which was established in 1970 by the National Academy of Sciences to honor professional achievement in the health sciences and to serve as a national resource for independent analysis and recommendations on issues related to medicine, biomedical sciences, and health.

"As the Institute of Medicine celebrates this milestone, it is a great pleasure to welcome these distinguished individuals as members," said IOM President Harvey V. Fineberg. "Election recognizes those who have made major contributions to the advancement of the medical sciences, health care, and public health. It is considered one of the highest honors in these fields."

Current active members elect new members from a slate of candidates nominated for their professional achievement. A diversity of talent among members is assured by the Institute's charter, which requires that at least one-quarter be selected from fields outside the health professions - such as the social and behavioral sciences, law, engineering, and the humanities.

With their election, members make a commitment to involve themselves in the work of the Institute, which conducts studies and other activities addressing a wide range of issues in medical science, health services, public health, and health policy. Some current studies are a project to recommend appropriate nutritional standards for foods sold in schools, an evaluation of the nation's system for ensuring the safety of prescription drugs after they have reached the market, and an assessment of emergency health care in the United States and recommendations for improving it.

Margaret Grey, DrPH, RN, FAAN is the Dean and Annie Goodrich Professor at the Yale School of Nursing. She has been at Yale since January of 1993. Prior to assuming the Deanship on September 1, 2005, she served as Associate Dean for Scholarly Affairs. She is also Director of the NIH funded Center for Self and Family Management and a related pre and post-doctoral training program. She was the founding director of the School's doctoral program. Previously she held progressive academic and administrative appointments at the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University. She holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Pittsburgh, an MSN in pediatric nursing from Yale University, and a Doctorate in Public Health and social psychology from Columbia University. Her responsibilities at the Yale School of Nursing include oversight of the scholarly activities in the School and teaching in the doctoral program.

A pediatric nurse practitioner with expertise in diabetes, Dr. Grey's research has focused on the natural history of adaptation to chronic illness in childhood, especially children with diabetes mellitus, and the study of behavioral interventions that improve both metabolic control of diabetes and the quality of life in young people and their parents. Preventing type 2 diabetes in high risk youth is a more recent scholarly interest. She has been instrumental in the development of practice-based research networks in nursing. She has been principal investigator for grants totaling over $15 million.

Dr. Grey is the author of over 160 journal articles, chapters, and abstracts, and has received numerous regional and national honors for her research. She is the recipient of the Excellence in Nursing Research Award from the Association of Faculties of Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Programs, the Achievement in Research Award from the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, the Outstanding Nurse Researcher Award from the Eastern Nursing Research Society, and the Virginia Henderson Award for Outstanding Contributions to Nursing Research from the Connecticut Nurses' Association, among other awards. Dr. Grey is also a Distinguished Fellow of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Associates and Nurse Practitioners, and a Fellow in the Society of Behavioral Medicine. She was elected to the American Academy of Nursing in 1990.

She has served on multiple NIH and AHRQ review panels, and she was the chairperson of the Nursing Science Review Committee for the National Institute of Nursing Research from 1995-1997. She was President of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Associates and Practitioners, a member of the second cohort of Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellows, and a member of the National Advisory Council for Nursing Research at the National Institutes of Health. She was recently a member of the Board of Directors of the American Diabetes Association where she has been instrumental in developing standards of behavioral care for youth with diabetes.
