YSN Dean Chairs CANS State of the Science Congress

New Haven, CT — October 24, 2006

Dean Margaret Grey served as Program Chair of the 2006 State of the Science Congress, held in Washington, D. C., October 12-14, 2006. The Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science, an open member council of the American Academy of Nursing, sponsored this event in conjunction with the 20th Anniversary of the National Institute of Nursing Research.

The State of the Science Congress is a biennial research dissemination conference where nurse-researchers from around the country join with recognized scientific experts and funding and policy makers to explore emerging scientific discoveries related to nursing and healthcare practice.

This year's meeting, focusing on the theme of "Nursing Research - Improving Life: Development and Dissemination of Nursing Innovation," provided a forum for communicating emerging innovations in nursing science and an opportunity for nurse scientists to dialogue about current research in nursing and health care. The State of the Science Congress provides an important opportunity for nurse scientists across the nation and across many areas of inquiry to explore common interests.

In addition to individual podium, symposia and poster sessions, this year's congress featured a point/counter-point discussion, invited plenary and panel sessions and state of the science symposia by some of the most senior investigators in nursing. Dr. Grey participated in one lively exchange in the Point/Counterpoint series, on the topic of "Multi-Site Trials: Are we ready or not?" in which she defended the affirmative position.

A contingent of YSN faculty members also attended the congress and a special evening gathering, "Friends of the NINR Nightingala." Those present from YSN included, Barbara Guthrie, Marty Swartz, Lois Sadler, Marge Funk, Robin Whittemore and Meg Bourbonniere. During the CANS meetings, YSN Associate Professor Angela Crowley, presented a research paper entitled, "Impact of nursing consultation on children's health and safety in child care centers."

The objectives of the Congress were three-fold, to create a national forum for communicating emerging innovations in nursing science related to nursing practice; disseminate research findings that can influence practice, education, research and healthcare policies and; influence the nursing research agenda of the future.
