Yale School of Nursing presented the Excellence in Caring in Chronic Illness Awards to two community leaders in patient care
New Haven, CT -On February 26, 2007, the Yale School of Nursing (YSN) Center for Excellence in Chronic Illness Care presented the Excellence in Caring in Chronic Illness Award to Linda Pellico and Geralyn R. Spollett, advocates and providers for the improvement of patient care. This award acknowledges consistent excellence in the promotion or delivery of care for people with chronic illness and their families.
Linda Honan Pellico, PhD, RN is an Assistant Professor at the Yale School of Nursing and an extraordinary ambassador for the profession. She has taught in the Graduate Entry Prespecialty in Nursing program (GEPN) since 1989, served as Program Director and Curriculum Coordinator. She developed a state wide public education program "Have Bones, Will Travel" which introduces elementary school children to human anatomy emphasizing health and safety. In 2003, she spearheaded the development of an annual creative writing award and created the book, "Do you see what I see?" which is a compilation of years of students journaling and historical photographs. Each September she guides a fresh group of new nursing students toward their RN investing in them her vast knowledge and deep sense of caring. One colleague says of her that the "caring is so deep in Linda's soul that it pours out in her teaching, her research, her writing and indeed in her friendship." She is a skilled provider to her patients who are chronically ill and their families and a role model to her students and an asset to YSN.Read her citation.
Geralyn R. Spollett MSN, ANP, CDE is an adult nurse practitioner and associate director of the Yale Diabetes Center affiliated with the Yale School of Medicine Faculty Practice. She is an active member of the American Diabetes Association, currently serving on its board of directors, and of the American Association of Diabetes Educators. An editor of Diabetes Spectrum and chair of the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators, her contributions are frequently recognized, most recently by the American Diabetes Association, which named her Outstanding Diabetes Educator in 2006. Through her tireless efforts and dedication she has raised the quality of care for all persons with diabetes through her clinical practice and by the education of the next generation of nurses. The 2007 Excellence in Caring in Chronic Illness Awards were presented during the Yale School of Nursing Convocation program which took place on Monday, February 26, 2007 at 4 p.m. Lesley Degner, PhD, BN, MA, Professor and Chair, Cancer Nursing, University of Manitoba, Canada, delivered the keynote address titled "Bringing evidence into practice: Can theory help in promoting knowledge uptake?"
