Macy Grant to Expand Yale-Howard Partnership Center on Health Disparities

The Josiah Macy, Jr. Foundation has awarded Yale University School of Nursing (YSN) a grant in the amount of $560,511 to expand their partnership with Howard University. The Yale-Howard Partnership Center on Health Disparities brings nursing students from Howard University to Yale for an intensive research internship.
One model that has been successful in drawing young people into research careers is the Yale-Howard Nursing Scholars Program. The Program is a partnership between the nursing program at Howard University, a historically Black university, and YSN. The aim of the existing program is to introduce minority nursing students to careers in health equity research.
The gift from the Josiah Macy, Jr. Foundation will expand this innovative partnership to other health professionals (e.g., nursing, medicine, public health) to promote interest in research careers.
If the United States hopes to eliminate health disparities, then it is crucial that research-intensive universities begin by educating the future generation of health science researchers early in their college careers. Such an initiative will help position these scientists to become active leaders in the NIH Roadmap, an integrated vision to deepen our understanding of biology, stimulate interdisciplinary research teams, and reshape clinical research to accelerate medical discovery and improve people's health.
The Josiah Macy, Jr. Foundation is a privately endowed philanthropy located in the borough of Manhattan, New York City. The Foundation supports programs designed to improve the education of health professionals in the interest of the health of the public, and to enhance the representation of minorities in the health profession.
