Mark Lazenby '09 Awarded Fulbright Scholarship
New Haven, CT — May 14, 2009Yale University School of Nursing student Mark Lazenby '09 has been
awarded a Fulbright post-doctoral research scholarship for the academic
year 2009-2010. Lazenby will spend six months in Jordan researching the
spiritual wellbeing of cancer patients in the Arab and Muslim worlds.
Lazenby
will graduate from YSN in May 2009 with a Master's of Science in
Nursing, specializing in oncology. He previously earned a master's in
Theology from the Fuller Theological Seminary, and a PhD in Philosophy
of Religion from Boston University.
The Fulbright
grant will enable Lazenby to conduct research at the King Hussein
Cancer Center in Amman, Jordan. Lazenby has studied both the Islamic
religion and the psychosocial aspects of cancer. He states that the
role of religion and spirituality for people with cancer has been well
documented, but Arab-speaking patients are hardly represented. Lazenby
will look for a "common language" among religious cancer patients of
all parts of the world, employing a questionnaire that has been used in
eleven languages, but not yet in Arabic.
Lazenby
stated in his proposal, "My interest … piqued when, as a professor, I
taught Islamic philosophy to upper-division undergraduates who raised
questions about how the faith of Muslims of Arab descent helps them
navigate the difficult waters of chronic illness. The literature (then,
or now) has no clear answer."

international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S.
government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the
