Leading diabetes researcher at Yale is tapped for the Board of Directors of the American Diabetes Association

New Haven, CT

Margaret Grey, DrPH, FAAN, CPNP

The Yale School of Nursing (YSN) is proud to announce the election of Margaret Grey, DrPH, FAAN, CPNP, Independence Foundation Professor of Nursing and Associate Dean for Research Affairs at YSN, to the National Board of Directors of the American Diabetes Association.

The American Diabetes Association is the nation's leading nonprofit health organization providing diabetes research, information and advocacy. Founded in 1940, the American Diabetes Association conducts programs in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, reaching hundreds of communities. The mission of the organization is to prevent and cure diabetes, and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. To fulfill this mission, the American Diabetes Association funds research, publishes scientific findings, provides information and other services to people with diabetes, their families, health care professionals and the public and advocates for scientific research and for the rights of people with diabetes.

Grey has a distinguished record of clinical research concentrating on the adaptation of children and their families to diabetes. A pediatric nurse practitioner, Grey has focused her research on the natural history of adaptation to chronic illness in childhood, especially children with diabetes mellitus, and the study of behavioral interventions that improve both metabolic control of diabetes and the quality of life in young people. Grey is the author of over 100 journal articles, chapters, and abstracts. In addition to various regional and national honors for her research, a recent research project on the impact of a coping skills intervention for teens with diabetes won the Applied Nursing Research Award from the American Nurses Association Council on Nursing Research.

"I strongly believe that more research is needed to chart strategies to help the large and under served community of families coping with diabetes," said Grey. "The American Diabetes Association is committed to supporting the diabetes community, helping families manage this devastating disease, and finding a cure for diabetes, and I am very pleased to be part of that effort. "

"The American Diabetes Association is proud to include such an accomplished clinician on our National Board," said Francine Kaufman, MD, President of the American Diabetes Association. "Dr. Grey's expertise in the field of treating children and adolescents with diabetes will be particularly valuable in the Association's ongoing fight against this devastating disease," continued Kaufman.

Grey's three-year appointment at the Association will begin on July 1, 2002.
