YSN Among Top Nursing Schools in U.S. in NIH Funding

New Haven, CT — July 31, 2004

In May of 2004, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has issued its 2003 rankings in which the nursing institutions that have received support for research, training and fellowship activities are listed. Yale's School of Nursing was listed as #9. "This rise, from #48 in 1994, is an extraordinary accomplishment, resulting from the efforts of many," said Dean Catherine L. Gilliss.

In 1994, when the school's leadership committed to the development of a doctoral program, they also committed to the development and support of a research-intensive environment. Investments included opening the Office of Research Affairs, hiring an Associate Dean for Research Affairs, adding incremental research support staff, and dedicating space and equipment. Over time YSN has recruited many faculty who are important contributors to the School's research environment, both for their teaching contributions and their own research activity. Over the last decade, YSN has grown in quality and quality. "The current ranking is one reminder of the School's commitment and success," said Dean Gilliss.

"All members of the YSN community, regardless of their own direct involvement in NIH-funded research, have contributed to this success through their commitment to the ongoing development of YSN," she said.

"We have much of which to be proud. This particular success is quite stunning given its achievement in such a brief period of time."
