YSN Professor Emeritus receives AJN Book of the Year Award

"Speaking of Nursing... Narratives of Practice, Research, Policy and the Profession," by former YSN Dean, Donna Diers, received the 2004 American Journal of Nursing (AJN) Book of the Year Award in the Nursing Management and Leadership category. Professor Diers is featured in the January 2005 issue of AJN.
Her book is a collection of essays, speeches, and other papers that spans more than four decades, providing a colorful, challenging, controversial, and futuristic perspective on the evolution of clinical nursing research, advanced practice nursing, and nursing's engagement in policy debate. This book can be used as a primer on how to do public presentation of nursing and its issues, and how to write about nursing to professional and lay audiences. Its narrative style invites development of case-type discussion and takes readers behind the scenes to where nursing leadership really happens.
Donna Diers is a Professor Emerita at the Yale University School of Nursing and Senior Clinical Coordinator, Decision Support, Yale- New Haven Hospital. She also holds Adjunct Professor appointments at the University of Technology, Sydney and at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia.
In the United States, Professor Diers is identified with the emergence of clinical nursing research methodologies, as she wrote the first book on that subject. She is also recognized for her work on the policy and politics of advanced practice nursing (nurse practitioner and nurse-midwifery). In Australia, her work with casemix (applications of AR-DRG-type information for clinical practice and operational management) is particularly well known. Her publications have appeared in all major nursing journals in the USA and in many journals in health services in the US and Australia. She was Editor of Image - Journal of Nursing Scholarship for eight years, and serves as manuscript reviewer to a number of professional journals in nursing and health services. A popular public speaker, Professor Diers also consults and teaches on writing for publication.
