Abstract
To adequately evaluate treatment status of type 1 diabetes in adolescents, valid and reliable measures of both biological status and self-management are necessary. Currently, no self-report measure of self-management of type 1 diabetes in adolescents exits. This proposal seeks support to analyze the content validity and clarity of an instrument to measure self-management of type 1 diabetes in adolescents (SMOD-A). The analysis of the content validity of the SMOD-A is part of a larger instrument development study proposal currently under review (Revised R01 application submitted to NINR, July 1, 2003). The specific aim of this intramural proposal is to evaluate the content validity and clarity of the SMOD-A items through input from expert pediatric diabetes clinicians and researchers (panel 1), adolescents who have been identified as good self-managers of type 1 diabetes (panel 2), and parents of good self-managers of the disease (panel 3).To accomplish this aim, the three panels will be simultaneously asked to evaluate each SMOD-A item for content relevance and clarity, and to identify any instrument omissions. Items that do not achieve an appropriate level of content validity and clarity will be either eliminated or revised. If items are substantially revised or added to the SMOD-A, the same panels will be used to reassess the items allowing for at least 10 days to elapse between examination periods. Accomplishment of this phase of instrument development will allow ongoing work on the instrument to go forward and will either allow the researchers to be in good position to accept the R01 award or to revise that proposal for a third submission.
