An Expressive Arts Intervention to Promote Psychosocial Health in Adults with Type 2 Diabetes

Abstract

Type 2 diabetes is emerging as a public health epidemic of the 21st century. Type 2 diabetes contributes to the development of significant physiological and psychosocial complications. Considerable research has been undertaken to promote glycemic control and prevent diabetes-related complications of a physical nature. Yet, comparatively little research has been undertaken to prevent psychosocial complications associated with type 2 diabetes. Psychosocial comorbidity contributes to personal suffering and has also been shown to contribute to additional adverse effects, including poorer glycemic control, increased diabetes-related complications (particularly retinopathy and cardiovascular disease), and decreased self-management behaviors.

Therefore, the purpose of this study is to develop an expressive arts intervention to promote psychosocial health in adults with type 2 diabetes. The specific aims of this preliminary study are:

Phase I: To develop a group-based expressive arts intervention for the promotion of psychosocial health in adults with type 2 diabetes in collaboration with expressive arts experts, nurses who care for individuals with type 2 diabetes, and adults living with type 2 diabetes.

Phase II:

A. To evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of an expressive arts intervention for adults with type 2 diabetes.

B. To evaluate the preliminary efficacy of an expressive arts intervention for adults with type 2 diabetes on psychosocial health (diabetes-related distress, integration, well-being, and depressive symptoms).

The long-range goal of this project is to systematically develop an expressive arts intervention in order to prepare an application for funding of a randomized clinical trial to evaluate its efficacy. Incorporating varied perspectives into the intervention development will contribute to an intervention that is clinically relevant, personally meaningful to participants, feasible to implement in various clinical settings, and efficacious.
