Women's Role in the Management of Advanced Breast Cancer

Abstract

The proposed study will explore how women with advanced breast cancer manage their care, particularly during times of transition, given the possibilities of lack of knowledge of non-curative care options and limited clinician-patient communication. The study will also explore how patients with advanced illness define care transitions. Defining care transitions is relevant since patients can better manage their care with a clear understanding of how patients choose, move through, and adapt to the various phases of care. Findings will be used to design an innovative intervention that will help women develop the skills to comfortably manage their course of care, to the extent that they wish, through increased knowledge of care options and improved ability to communicate with clinicians.
