Evelyn Hamil Shopp ‘47

90 Outstanding Yale Nurses Recipient

Class of 1947

Wanting to help with the war effort, Evelyn Hamil Shopp, MSN, found her passion for nursing in an ad for YSN’s nursing program. Following World War II and during the polio epidemic, Evelyn joined a major program in Oklahoma, starting as staff nurse and rising to director of the polio division.

Taking early retirement, Evelyn credits her YSN education for her caring leadership skills that have advanced her into positions that she could only dream of, such as the boards of directors for the National League for Nursing and the American Nurses Association. She continues to have a strong presence in her community by developing a hospital volunteer program and partaking in fundraising activities.
