About

Nancy Schmieder Redeker, PhD, RN, FAHA, FAAN, is the Beatrice Renfield Term Professor of Nursing at YSN. Her research focuses on sleep disorders and their consequences and the development of self-management interventions to promote sleep in a variety of populations. Dr. Redeker’s program of research has included studies of sleep among patients who have cardiovascular disorders, and investigations of sleep in adult acute and critical care settings, as well as studies of sleep in families living with economic adversity.

As Principal Investigator (with Dual PI Henry Yaggi, MD) of the Yale Center for Sleep Disturbance in Acute and Chronic Conditions, an exploratory center funded by the NIH National Institute of Nursing Research in 2012, she provides mentorship and research support for research focused on understanding the biological and behavioral interrelationships between sleep and acute and chronic conditions and the development of bio-behavioral interventions focused on sleep disturbance. Dr. Redeker is also the Director of the YSN Biobehavioral Laboratory, a 2800 square foot facility that includes a state of the art 3- bed sleep laboratory, focus group room, and behavioral observation room with digital video, as well as space for interviewing, physical examination, and bio-specimen preparation and storage.

Dr. Redeker has published over 170 peer reviewed papers, abstracts, and book chapters on sleep and related topics, and her work has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the American Heart Association, the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, and the American Nurses Foundation.

Dr. Redeker edited the first nursing textbook on Sleep and Sleep Disorders [Redeker, N.S. & Phillips McEnany, G. (Eds.). (2011). Sleep Disorders and Sleep Promotion in Nursing Practice. New York: Springer], an American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year Award winner, emphasizes the uptake of scientific evidence about sleep and sleep disorders into nursing practice settings.

Dr. Redeker teaches in the PhD program at YSN and has taught extensively at the BSN, MSN, and doctoral levels, mentored many students and clinicians in sleep and the conduct of research, and provided numerous continuing education presentations to inter-disciplinary audiences and the public on sleep-related topics.

A Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and the American Heart Association, Dr. Redeker is Editor of Heart & Lung: The Journal of Acute and Critical Care, serves on the National Advisory Council for the National Institute of Nursing Research, and is an Ambassador for the Friends of the National Institute of Nursing Research. She is a Past-President of the Eastern Nursing Research Society.

Dr. Redeker previously served on the faculties of the College of Nursing, Rutgers-the State University of New Jersey and The School of Nursing of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. She earned an AB in Sociology from Rutgers University, BSN and MSN from Seton Hall University, a PhD in Nursing Research and Theory Development from New York University, and completed a fellowship in sleep disorders research at New York University School of Medicine.
