2010 Bellos Lecture: Nurses Make the Best Advocates

US Congresswoman Lois Capps

Lois Capps DIV '64, a six-term US Congresswoman representing California’s 23rd district, expressed the important role nurses play in shaping health care policy. Capps founded the House Nursing Caucus, and said the group has gained great influence during the recent health care debates. Of her 20-year career in nursing she said, "There is no such thing as a former nurse."

Capps pointed to the many generations of nurses who fought for a place at the decision-making table, and asked the audience to ask themselves, "What kind of health care system do I want to be a part of?"
