It isn't every day you meet a healthcare leader whose journey began under the stage lights. For Dr. Gregory Eichelzer (DNP ’24), nursing is actually a vibrant second act. Before discovering his passion for healthcare, Gregory spent seven years captivating audiences in professional musical theater across the United States and Europe. Far from being a detour, Gregory considers his time on stage the perfect rehearsal for nursing. It honed his adaptability, public speaking, and ability to truly connect with people—leadership skills that have become the heartbeat of his nursing career.

Today, Gregory brings that same dynamic energy to his role as the Nursing Innovation Administrator at The Brawerman Nursing Institute at Cedars-Sinai. His dedication to the hospital spans an impressive 20 years, steadily evolving from an eager new graduate in the Emergency Department (ED) to an ED educator, and later stepping up as the Associate Director of the GI Lab in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Far from being a detour, Gregory considers his time on stage the perfect rehearsal for nursing.”

Stepping into the world of nursing innovation wasn’t a path Gregory initially pictured for himself, but it unfolded as a natural extension of his Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project: the "Nursing Ideation Station." This groundbreaking platform gave frontline nurses a dedicated space to share their creative solutions. The results were stellar, generating one patent, 10 invention disclosures, and 42 submissions. More importantly, it brought the abstract concept of "innovation" to life, validating nurses' everyday ideas and shining a light on what was truly working on the units.

Now two years into this pioneering role, Gregory is the first to admit that blazing a new trail comes with its own unique hurdles. Because nursing innovation roles are still a rarity nationwide, he has essentially been writing the playbook from scratch, stepping into national-level leadership and coordination. He humbly credits his momentum to a visionary leader who gave him the canvas to design his role, and, crucially, to the steadfast network of his Yale School of Nursing (YSN) cohort.

Reflecting on his time at Yale School of Nursing, Gregory emphasizes the immense value of his cohort. The diverse perspectives and shared experiences among his peers created bonds they maintain to this day. He points to Yale’s elevated learning environment as the catalyst that profoundly sharpened his critical thinking and transformed him into a much stronger, more confident presenter and writer.

Looking ahead, Gregory is a fierce champion for ensuring the nursing perspective is woven into the very fabric of healthcare innovation. He firmly believes that achieving the quintuple aim—enhancing patient experience, improving population health, reducing costs, and improving the work life of health care providers—is impossible without including the nursing voice and notes that almost every organizational change impacts nursing. At Cedars-Sinai, he ensures nursing has a seat at the table by teaching innovation, networking across departments, and serving on the AI Governance Council, to name just a few of his responsibilities.

Gregory balances his technical and operational expertise with a strong focus on workforce development. As an active mentor himself, he understands that cultivating the next generation of nursing leaders requires more than just clinical training; it demands strong, authentic professional relationships in order to navigate the complexities of healthcare. He drives this culture forward by practicing what he preaches: maintaining that no matter how senior or experienced a nurse becomes, continuous growth always requires the perspective of a good mentor.
