Graduate Entry Pre-Specialty Nursing (GEPN) students were formally recognized for completing the GEPN program and welcomed into the nursing profession, at YSN’s GEPN Ceremony.
The event celebrated the hard work and dedication required to reach this milestone. In her remarks, GEPN Program Chair Laura Kierol Andrews highlighted the rigorous training completed during the first year: 46 academic credits, more than 900 hours of classroom and clinical experience, 12 high-fidelity simulations, skills bootcamps, and a community disaster simulation.
Dr. Andrews urged the students to “Remember your commitment to lifetime learning, as nursing is an ever-evolving field that requires continuous adaptation and growth in the provision of the best care possible for all individuals.”
The ceremony also included special moments of personal reflection. “Being coated at the ceremony resembles all that I have overcome and all that I can achieve moving forward,” said Kiley Sweet ’27 MSN, who was coated and received their GEPN honor cords on stage alongside her service dog Marlin, “Many people told me it was not realistic to go through nursing school because of my spinal cord injury. What can I say, I love to prove people wrong! Being able to do it with Marlin was so special. We felt surrounded by love and support.”
As students don their apricot cords, the color of nursing, and white coats they officially embrace the responsibilities of nursing, pledging to provide compassionate, evidence-based care and to uphold YSN’s mission of advancing better health for all.
