Dr. Starkweather is a tenured professor in the School of Nursing who has devoted her career to advancing scientific knowledge on the bio-psycho-social mechanisms of pain and improving pain management for individuals and families. As a neuroscience nurse, acute care nurse practitioner, and biobehavioral researcher, she is able to cross bridges between basic science approaches for understanding and treating pain and clinical practice implications that must be considered in the translational process. She has been NIH-funded for the many years, is a prolific writer with a substantial number of peer-reviewed publications and serves on national and international boards and committees focused on improving pain management for people of our nation and across the world.
