About

Martha K. Swartz is a Professor and a certified pediatric nurse practitioner in primary care, having held joint appointments with Yale New Haven Hospital, Yale Medicine, and Fair Haven Community Health Care in New Haven, CT. Her undergraduate degrees are from Oberlin College and Conservatory and the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, Case Western Reserve University. She holds a master’s degree from the University of Michigan, and a doctorate from the University of Connecticut.

She is the recipient of the Virginia Henderson Clinical Scholarship Award, Sigma Theta Tau International, Delta Mu Chapter, a University of Connecticut Pre-Doctoral Fellowship, the Scholarship for Leadership Award (meritorious) from Nurses Educational Funds, Inc., the Alumna Award for Excellence from the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, Case Western Reserve University, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. She served as Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Pediatric Health Care from 2008 – 2023 and has also held numerous offices for national professional associations, most recently as Secretary for the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners. 

Research Interests/Clinical Practice

For most of her career at YSN, Dr. Swartz has held an affiliative appointment with Yale Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics, Section of General Pediatrics.

Dr. Swartz’ scholarly areas of interest include health related quality of life in children with chronic illness, and editorial and publication practices in nursing.
