Yale School of Nursing Centennial Celebration

Yale School of Nursing Centennial Celebration
September 2023 – May 2024

Yale School of Nursing is the world’s first academic, autonomous school of nursing. Since 1923, we have been home to the first female dean at Yale University, the first professor of psychiatric nursing in the world, and the first psychiatric master’s degree program in the United States. Our graduates continue to set the standard in clinical care, research, and professional accomplishment. We are on call for humanity. We are Yale Nurses.

Ongoing and Upcoming Centennial Events:

Now - February 29, 2024: YSN Centennial Online Trivia Quest

Yale School of Nursing (YSN) is launching the second semester of centennial celebrations with an online trivia quest that begins January 29. Anyone curious about the school’s 100-year history in the nation’s most trusted profession is welcome to learn more and enter for the chance to win one of two centennial swag bags.

All members of the Yale community, including students, faculty, and staff are invited to participate. In addition, anyone who is interested in nurses, midwives, or healthcare. YSN’s newly admitted students, many of whom will be on campus for Admitted Students Day on February 2, are also welcome to broaden their knowledge of YSN trailblazers and significant milestones.

Trivia Answer Sneak Peeks

YSN will use its four social media channels to share a weekly sneak peek at a trivia question and answer until the contest concludes on February 29. The first preview is available now.
Winners will be drawn at random from participants who complete all 10 questions. Answers do not have to be correct to be eligible. Complete answers will be shared on nursing.yale.edu and the YSN social media platforms in early March.

March 25, 2024 - Submission Deadline for Creative Writing Awards: Centennial Edition

All YSN students in every specialty and degree program are invited to share the stories of their nursing journey by submitting poetry or prose to the Centennial Edition of the Creative Writing Awards.  As YSN celebrates the 21st year of this proud tradition, we are also excited to welcome online MSN student participation for the first time!

Submissions are due Monday, March 25, by 11:59 pm. A panel of judges will blindly assess the entries and choose three winners, each of whom will receive a cash prize of $1,000.

The awards ceremony will take place on the evening of Wednesday, April 24, and the winners will read their work aloud. There will be no charge to attend this event. Additional details regarding awards ceremony registration will follow shortly.

Every student at YSN has something valuable to say about the nation’s most trusted profession, and all participants are encouraged to make readers laugh, cry, and think. Please see below for contest details, and best of luck!

YSN’s core mission is “better health for all people.” As we celebrate YSN’s 100th anniversary, we take this opportunity to explore and reflect on the school’s first century. Highlights of this exhibition include the assessment that helped found YSN as a completely new model of nursing education; the immense growth and change across the student population and faculty; the innovative methods of pedagogy and research inside and outside the classroom; a long tradition of community and global service; and a glimpse of the school today.
