Global Health Field Experience

YSN in Uganda

Overview

The Yale School of Nursing (YSN) believes that creating a collaborative global community is vital to providing equitable and better health for all people. The international partnerships developed by the Office of Global Affairs and Planetary Health (OGAPH) offer YSN students a unique opportunity to expand intercultural understanding, deepen their knowledge of community health, and gain practical clinical or cultural experience in a diverse environment, thus, contributing to students’ success as culturally knowledgeable nurse practitioners and nurse researchers. OGAPH continues to identify, develop and foster new bi-directional partnerships for all levels of nursing students and researchers.

Global Clinical Field Experience

Our global clinical experiences are academic initiatives that provide MSN specialty students with observational and hands-on experience to work with diverse groups and populations worldwide.

A YSN faculty leader develops each field experience in partnership with OGAPH and the in-country partner institution. It is designed to meet program and academic objectives to complement students’ development and learning.

Research Opportunities

Our global partnerships offer tremendous global and planetary health research and education opportunities. Each partner provides a rich cultural immersion experience within their country’s health system and a chance to explore research questions collaboratively. Students interested in participating in research with our international partners should discuss their interests and academic schedule with their faculty advisor and identify Yale faculty for research direction and advice. Our Office can help set up an initial meeting and facilitate discussions with our partners to further the collaboration.

Note: Research opportunities may require relevant IRB approvals from Yale and the partner institution, which can take 3-6 months. So, any interest in pursuing research should be planned well in advance. Please contact sohani.sirdeshmukh@yale.edu to begin the planning process as soon as possible.
