Instructional Technology Specialist (69638BR)

GENERAL PURPOSE

Reporting to the Director of the Instructional Design and Learning Technologies, the Instructional Technologist will be responsible for the support in the areas of instructional design, technology and media-enhanced teaching and learning. Works closely with faculty and staff to strengthen the adoption of creative and effective solutions to extend the School’s degree and non-degree instructional programs in campus-based, online, and blended settings. As the YSN liaison for technology-assisted teaching and learning, the Specialist will maintain an advanced working fluency with state-of-the art technologies and teaching best practices.  In all work, supports YSN diversity and inclusion values and commitments.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Identifies educational objectives and appropriate supporting technologies and provides expert advice to faculty on course design and development.
  • Assist in the preparation of course materials for online distribution, uploading and organization of course materials, and production of digital resources that will be easily accessible online.
  • Researches and identifies new trends in online/hybrid learning design and practice. Makes recommendations to enhance and grow the School’s programs.
  • Provides training for faculty, staff and students on the use of instructional technology products and services.
  • Provides high-level service for the design, development, delivery and adoption of instructional technology products, pilots, services, and initiatives. 
  • Maintains the School’s learning management system (currently Canvas) and its effective use in the YSN curriculum.
  • Assists with the development of online orientation programs and provides ongoing support.  Assesses support needs and advances ongoing improvements accordingly.
  • Collaborates with YSN A/V Services to advance the use of classroom technologies.
  • Maintains in depth knowledge and an advanced working fluency with state-of-the art technologies.
  • Manages relationships with external vendors involved in the production and delivery of courses.
  • Manages assigned project tasks to ensure timely and high-quality outcomes. Provides regular status reports on assigned projects.
  • Carries highest possible degree of service and responsiveness in complex, multi-vendor, and multi-platform environment.
  • Provides first and second tier support for all applications.
  • Proactively identify problem trends and known error conditions and work towards a permanent solution.
  • Develop and maintain Application Support standards and procedures and other documentation as required.
Principal Responsibilities
  1. Provide leadership in the areas of technology and media enhanced teaching and learning. 
  2. Advise faculty and program directors on methods to use technology to enhance instruction. 
  3. Provide direction for and actively engage in the design, development, delivery and adoption of instructional technology products, pilots, services, and initiatives. 
  4. Create systematic project and design plans to facilitate the communication of instructional technology project needs to developers, multimedia producers, and other staff. 
  5. Develop strategies for classroom technology, and select, implement, and promote their adoption. 
  6. Administer the use of the School’s learning management systems.
  7. Promote and build School‐wide community awareness of the range of available instructional technology tools, services and approaches.
  8. Develop support models, policies, and procedures consistent with the goals of the School. 
  9. Evaluate outcomes and impacts of technology-enhanced learning initiatives through the design of metrics and other forms of assessment. 
  10. Maintain an advanced working fluency with state-of-the art technologies, current research on learning theory, and their applications to the broad range of School objectives. 
  11. As a project manager, supervise staff, student workers, and contractors assigned to projects. Regularly communicate project, status, resolve issues, and meet expectations for deliverables. 
  12. Develop and manage a budget for instructional technology support.
  13. Serve as a senior member of the Yale-wide IT management team, contribute to strategic planning and discussions 
  14. Other projects and duties as assigned. 
REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s degree and at least five years of related work experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in instructional technology, instructional design, education or related field preferred.
  • At least three years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Skill/Ability 1

Knowledge of instructional design principles and practices applicable to hybrid, online and classroom instruction. Proven ability with learning platforms (e.g., Canvas) and software used to develop and deliver instructional content.

Required Skill/Ability 2

Experience developing functional, intuitive multimedia course materials and user documentation and tutorials concerning use of instructional technologies. Experience with collaborative web/video conference tools (e.g. Zoom).

Required Skill/Ability 3

Knowledge of presentation, graphic, video editing, and authorizing software tools, such as Camtasia, Photoshop and/or Illustrator.

Required Skill/Ability 4

Enthusiasm, interest, and flexibility in acquiring new technology skills. Excellent organizational skills to contribute to team efforts in day-to-day operations and for special projects.

Required Skill/Ability 5

Excellence in working under time constraints, managing competing requests for services, and successfully working on multiple projects. Excellent written, oral and presentation skills. Strong customer service orientation.
