Commencement for the Class of 2022

The excitement builds! Please find below the logistics for the Old Campus Ceremony and the diploma ceremony at YSN.

Regalia Pickup
Pick up regalia at the Payne Whitney Gymnasium John J. Lee Amphitheater during the hours listed below. Please bring your Yale ID. If you are unable to pick up your attire at any of these times, you must make arrangements for someone else to pick it up for you. The person who is picking up your attire must present their Yale I.D. (or a valid official I.D.) with a note and your signature giving them permission to pick up your attire. 
  • Wednesday, May 18 - 11:00 am to 5:00 pm
  • Thursday, May 19 - 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • Friday, May 20 - 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, May 21 - 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Sunday, May 22 - 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
  • Monday, May 23 - 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
OLD CAMPUS CEREMONY
  • Old Campus Celebration procession begins at 10 am. We will meet in front of Sterling Library on Cross Campus (see red pin on map below) by 9:45 am; we are on the side closer to Berkeley College. Look for blue flags and Nursing signage. Regalia is required.
  • Guests will go to Old Campus to secure seats for the ceremony. Gates for Old Campus will open at 8 am. There is no limit for guests at the Old Campus Ceremony.  
  • Parking information can be found here.
  • It will be very crowded with nearly 20,000 guests expected; visitors are advised to arrive early. 
  • Tell your guests that YSN sits on the left-hand side if they are facing the stage and we will enter the gate on the left-hand side. 
  • Guests should try to find a seat close a large screen for best viewing of the ceremony.
  • There will be bag checks; bags must be smaller than 12” x 12”.
  • There will be a shuttle that leaves YSN PROMPTLY at 9 am to take a limited number of students and guests to Old Campus and will return to West Campus afterwards. Sign up here.
  • After the ceremony, if your family is taking you back to YSN, you should choose a meeting point.  If you are taking the shuttle, it will pick up at the corner of College and Chapel Streets.
  • The Old Campus Ceremony is approximately 90 minutes. 
  • YSN has a tradition of being the most visually joyful school when the President announces the conferral of degrees. Feel welcome to bring ticker tape, confetti, silly string, etc. (See photo above of YSN ‘19 for inspo)
  • Commencement Day is exciting and fun! You will definitely get your steps in, so plan footwear accordingly. 
  • You may want to advise guests to pack a snack to enjoy between celebrations. YSN will provide snacks and water to graduates during the procession lineup.
YSN DIPLOMA CEREMONY 
  • The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 1 pm under a tent on the YSN front lawn.
  • Graduates should arrive at the back courtyard of YSN between Building 400 and 410 by 12:30 pm prepare for the procession.
  • YSN staff will line you up alphabetically according to specialty and after the procession you will be directed by YSN staff to the reserved seating. 
  • YSN will be open for restroom use by graduates and guests.
  • The Moore Classroom will have a livestream of the ceremony for guests who require an indoor seating option.
  • The ceremony is approximately 90 minutes. 
  • Guests will check in and take their seats under the tent. Due to fire marshal restrictions, this event is limited to 4 guests per graduate.
  • A celebratory reception and mingling to follow under a tent in the parking lot of YSN.
  • During the reception, YSN swag will be available for students who complete the post-graduation plans and contact info exit survey, which was sent to your individual Yale email addresses by Erin Morelli. Please complete this prior to Commencement Day. Filling out the anonymous feedback survey is also much appreciated.
Shuttle to Old Campus
There will be a shuttle that leaves YSN PROMPTLY at 9 am to take a limited number of students and guests to Old Campus and will return to West Campus afterwards. Sign up here.

Speaker 
We are pleased that Admiral Rachel L. Levine, the 17th Assistant Secretary for Health for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the head of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps will address graduates as our Commencement speaker this year. Due to unforeseen responsibilities with the World Health Organization, Admiral Levine will be sharing a pre-recorded address.

Livestreaming
University Commencement will be livestreamed on the Yale University YouTube channel. The YSN diploma ceremony will be livestream on the YSN YouTube channel. Links will be posted on the YSN homepage and the YSN Events calendar the day of the ceremony.

Vaccination Policy
As previously noted, at all guests older than age 5 must be vaccinated and boosted and prepared to show documentation if asked.
