Smallpox, Big Achievement: Lessons from Disease Eradication

Event time:
Wednesday, May 4, 2022 - 4:00pm to 5:00pm
Event description:

Wednesday, May 4th from 4 – 5PM, the Yale Institute for Global Health (YIGH) will host Dr. Bill Foege, former Chief of the Smallpox Eradication Program and Director of the CDC, at the virtual Global Health Conversation Series.

Over 40 years ago smallpox was eradicated from the planet, representing the first time in history that an infectious disease was defeated. Drawing on his decades of experience in global health, Dr. Foege will reflect on his pivotal role in eradicating a disease that was estimated to have killed 300 million people in the 20th century, how this work fits into the larger context of key chapters in the history of global health, and what lessons we can learn to address COVID-19 and future pandemics.
