Dr. Sean Saifa Wall is an intersex activist and rising scholar who has a long record of scholarship and interventions into intersex medicine and public health.  Dr. Wall was a prestigious Marie Sklowdska-Curie Fellow at the University of Huddersfield where he earned his doctorate in Sociology.  He has written articles in sources as varied as the journal Transgender Studies Quarterly, Narrative Inquiry in Bioethics, Keywords in Gender and Sexuality Studies, and Critical Social Policy, among others. The book that he co-authored–titled Intersex, Variations of Sex Characteristics, DSD Critical Approaches: Critical Approaches–was just published with Routledge at the end of 2024.

Dr. Wall is also an internationally respected expert who has been featured in media regularly over the past two decades including NPR, Scientific American, the Guardian, and ABC News Nightline.  He was one of three activists featured in the 2023 documentary Every Body by Julie Cohen who also directed RBG and My Name is Pauli Murray. Aside from his media appearances, Dr. Wall is a deeply influential organizer and policy-maker.  He has served as Board President of Interact: Advocates for Intersex Youth and advisor to the Astraea Intersex Fund for Human Rights.  And perhaps most notably, he co-founded the highly-respected Intersex Justice Project, an organization centering Black and Brown liberation and partnerships with activists in the Global South.  IJP’s #EndIntersexSurgery campaign pressured Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago to become the first children’s hospital in the United States to denounce genital surgeries on intersex infants. Above all else, Dr. Wall is committed to racial equity and a radical vision of bodily autonomy for people with intersex variations.
