Lindsay Powell, DNP

About

Dr. Mary Lindsay Powell is a Lecturer in the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner specialty and Behavioral Health Director with the Yale Community Health Care Van in Internal Medicine’s HIV program. She received her MSN and DNP from the University of Virginia where she taught in their second degree program. While at UVA, she spear headed the School of Nursing’s study abroad initiative in South Africa through the SAVANA (Southern Africa Virginia Networks and Associations) program. In 2015, she received the Yale SON’s Annie Goodrich Award for Excellence in Teaching. Through Yale’s School of Nursing’s Global Health Concentration, she led a women’s empowerment project for those in Nicaragua struggling with depression. She currently teaches psychopathology, psychopharmacology and the second year seminar in the Psychiatric/ Mental Health APRN Specialty, and Mental Health Management for Advanced Practice Nurses for non-psychiatric specialties.

Research Interests

Splitting her time between the SON and the Yale Clinical and Community Research (YCCR) program with the SOM’s Infectious Disease AIDS Program, she has directed the clinical services for numerous SAMSHA and HRSA grants that target the homeless population, those recently released from incarceration who struggle with substance abuse, mental health and HIV difficulties. Her DNP capstone project focused on assessing HIV services and the role of technology to build capacity in rural South Africa.

Clinical Practice

With over 30 years of experience in the field of psychiatric nursing working with marginalized populations, Dr. Powell’s clinical interests include global health, the social determinates of disease, concepts of shared decision making, the neurologic basis of psychiatric and addictive disorders, public health care and policy, and HIV/AIDS. She currently sees patients one day a week with the Community Health Care Van where much of the population base has substance use disorders, PTSD and histories of incarceration.
