About

Monica Slinkard Philipp is a full-time lecturer in the Nurse-Midwifery and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner specialty. Monica brings expertise in the role of women’s health, including international maternity care, as well as primary care. In addition to clinical care, she has held a number of administrative positions as medical director and project manager. Monica enjoys teaching adult learners and has experience teaching in the United States and abroad, in multiple languages.

Monica received her MSN from YSN with a dual certification in women’s health and adult primary nurse practitioner. Prior to that, she earned her bachelor’s degree in Biology from Davidson College in North Carolina. She is originally from California and speaks English, Spanish, and French.

Clinical Practice

Monica has been in clinical practice since 2010 and has worked in both women’s health and primary care settings in Washington, DC, New Mexico, East Africa, and now Connecticut. Her clinical practice has been devoted to meeting the needs of patients when there are significant barriers to care, financial or otherwise. She currently cares for patients at the Women’s Center at Yale New Haven Hospital offering primarily obstetrical and gynecologic care to women, from adolescence through menopause.

Research/Innovation interests

Monica has also been involved in several large scale clinical projects with the aim to standardize and improve clinical care in the areas of prenatal care and primary care. In East Africa her work was mainly focused on capacity building to improve patient outcomes in rural clinics, including decreasing maternal mortality as rural outpatient clinics also gave maternity and delivery care. She was a key member of the international Primary Care Collaborative with members from East Africa and India, convened through Center for Health Market Innovations and Results for Development, collaborating on improvement in primary care entrepreneurship and innovation through both high and low-tech solutions. In New Mexico she spearheaded a project to standardize prenatal care delivery among a hospital system’s 30+ outpatient clinics. Most recently she has been exploring the team dynamics necessary to foster best patient care delivery in the women’s health outpatient setting.
