Dr. Martha Swartz Receives Prestigious NAPNAP Loretta C. Ford Award for Outstanding Contributions to Pediatric HealthcareYSN faculty member Martha (Marty) Swartz, PhD, APRN, CPNP-PC, FAAN recently added the Loretta C. Ford Distinguished Nurse Practitioner Award to her long list of professional accolades.

The Ford Award is bestowed by the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners in recognition of a member’s “outstanding contributions to expansion or improvement of pediatric health care, and/or advancement of the profession of pediatric-focused APRNs at the state, national, or international level.” It is the Association’s highest honor.

“This is an exceptional honor for someone of exceptional merit,” said Yale School of Nursing Dean Azita Emami. “Dr. Swartz has contributed to her students, her university, and her profession in countless ways.”

One of the criteria for award consideration is that the nominee must, “Significantly contribute to the promotion and advancement of curricular development or education delivery or clinical practice for pediatric APRNs at the national level.” Dr. Swartz has done all three, and her efforts have been recognized by numerous awards including Virginia Henderson Clinical Scholarship Award, the Scholarship for Leadership Award (meritorious) from Nurses Educational Funds, Inc., and the Alumna Award for Excellence from the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, Case Western Reserve University. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and served as editor-in-chief for the Journal of Pediatric Health Care from 2008 to 2023.

At YSN, Dr. Swartz is a professor in the pediatric and family specialties and has served as Director for the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Specialty and as Associate Dean for Clinical and Community Affairs. In addition to her YSN role, for many years Dr. Swartz held an affiliative appointment with Yale Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics, Section of General Pediatrics. Her scholarly areas of interest include health related quality of life in children with chronic illness, and editorial and publication practices in nursing.
